“Learning and teaching should not stand on opposite banks and just watch the river flow by; instead, they should embark together on a journey down the water. Through an active, reciprocal exchange, teaching can strengthen learning how to learn.”

— Loris Malaguzzi (1920-1994), Italian early childhood education specialist

I’m really enjoying the Education Pages the New York Times provides on its website. Lots on there for parents, teachers and students. Check ’em out! Happy Third Week of School, everyone.

poem of the day: “Drinking Fountain,” by Marchette Chute

August 31st, 2010 · Comments Off on poem of the day: “Drinking Fountain,” by Marchette Chute · Poetry

“Drinking Fountain”

“When I climb up
To get a drink
It doesn’t work
The way you’d think.

I turn it up.
The water goes
And hits me right
Upon the nose.

I turn it down
To make it small
And don’t get any
Drink at all.”

— Marchette Chute

Is it time for school to start yet? My little nieces in Iowa are already back in school. One of them even decided to start wearing socks for the occasion. Hmm. She does not like socks, but she does like school, so this is sort of a big deal.

To my former students: HAVE A GREAT YEAR!!!

To my new students: I’m looking forward to meeting you, and let’s have a great year, shall we?

Best, always,

Ms. Nancy
